  Book Report of Jane Eyre

  2012级英语教育一班 姓名:吴林泽 学号:201216010104

  1. About the author.

Charlotte Bronte was born in a family of country minister in Yorkshire,England in 1816. Her mother was died young. Her father was a minister who was well-educated and had a great influence on charlotte Bronte’s literary creation. When Charlotte was 8, she was sent to a charitable institution. In there, she had a miserable life and her two sisters were died with a bad cold. So charlotte came back to home with her younger sister and went to a local country school when she was 15 years old. She once became a governess and then began her literary career.

In charlotte Bronte’s whole life, she only created 4 masterpieces, Jane Eyre in 1847, Shirley in 1849, Villette in 1853, The Professor in 1857 (which published after her death), in which Jane Eyre achieved a huge success at that time and made charlotte famous. Charlotte Bronte and her sisters were respected as “The There Bronte Sisters”.

  2. Background.

In the 19th century, with the development of capitalism and the increasing intensity of class conflicts, Chartist Movement began. The government had series of reforms but the rights and states of women were not improved. The up-class women usually got married early or stayed with their parents. The poor women had to work in factories or most of them chose to be maidservants. Women at that time wanted badly to eliminate oppression and discrimination from men. Under such society background, Jane Eyre was created.

  3. Summary.

When Jane Eyre was just an infant , her parents were dead , and so she had to live with hers uncle Reed's family at Gateshead . In this family , only hers uncle Reed raised her as one of his own and the housemaid Bessie had always been kind to her . However , aunt Reed and hers three children turned against Jane Eyre . For example , aunt Reed had blamed and shouted to her even though she was right . Three cousins had always misprized her , especially cousin , John Reed . He had always hit and humiliated her .

Afterward , Jane Eyre was sent to Lowood School , which was a charity school or an orphanage where many orphans studied and lived in , by hers cruel and arrogant aunt Reed . The orphanage had many strict rules . In Lowood School , Jane Eyre continuously suffered from mental and physical suffering , and had always starved , suffered cold , taken a beating and punished to standing in a long time with other children . But Jane lived through eight years and got a good achievement in bad conditions depended on hers tenacious vitality .

When she was eighteen years old ,she acted as a governess at Thornfield Hall. And then she fell in love with Edward Rochester who was a master of Thornfield Hall with a cold character and awful look but having a inner passion . After experiencing lots of difficulties and cumber , Jane and Edward married and had a happiness life .

  4. Impressions and comments.

Jane Eyre is a great book that still has strong reference for establishing us personality. It inspires us to be independent strong women. It guides us how to struggle with hard environments and pursue a bright future bravely. It makes me realize that appearance is not so important. What we should emphasize and think highly of is inside. We are supposed to fulfill our inside and always deal with things with principle. But sometimes I think Jane was too implicative in expressing her passion. She sometimes behaved so calm that seemed like she had no feeling and is a cold machine. So in some extent, we should not be too shy to express ourselves.

At the same time, this novel tells us the best life is the human dignity and love, in today's society, if everyone wants to achieve their value; they have to turn to money for help. The dignity and love seem to be abandoned for people. People are crazy for money and status to give up love. Between the poor and the rich prefer choose richer, and choose between love and not love prefer choose not love. Very few people like Jane for the love for the personality to abandon all of things.

Title: reading report about Jane Eyre

  Name: Bu Gua(卜卦)

  Class: sophomore (2)

Jane Eyre, it’s one of my favorite English novels. Another one is Pride and prejudice. The two ladies, Jane and Elizabeth, are some kind of similar. Both of them are independent, long for true love, and defend against the old rules. They don’t have beautiful face, but they have beautiful minds.

When story began, Jane was a little girl living with her aunts and cousins. They didn’t like her, scolded her, treated her just like a nursemaid, and even locked her in the Red House. Later, she was sent to the Lowood School, where she met Helen, her friend. As time went by, the little poor girl grew up. Then she became a governess for a ten-year-old girl at Thornfield, where she met Mr. Rochester, her master. As a governess at Thornfield, she tasted the pleasures and pains of love. She fell in love with Rochester but had to leave him for some reasons. She found shelter at Moor House, where she focused on teaching and rejected Mr. River’s marriage. At the end, Jane returned to Thronfield after Mr. Rochester was blind. They have a quiet wedding:

“I know what it is to be love and be loved. No woman has ever been closer to her husband than I am to Edward. I am my husband’s life, and he is mine. We are always together, and have never had enough of each other’s company.”

Jane had a bad childhood, but it didn’t affect her much. She read books behind the thick curtain; she got education for eight years in poor condition; she was intelligent, sensible and wise. At the relationship with Edward Rochester, she was quite calm. The governess with her beautiful, pure and

frank soul, move Edward. Rochester was rich, clever but a little weird. Jane thought she didn’t really know him and never sure whether he was serious or joking. So she kept a distance with him. Fortunately, she came across the distance and expressed her love to Mr. Rochester:

“Do you think I can watch another woman become your bride? Do you think I’m a machine, without feelings? Do you think, because I’m small and poor and plain, that I have no soul and no heart? Well, you’re wrong! I have as much soul and heart as you. It’s my spirit that speaks to your spirit! We are equal in the sight of God!”

I think when you heard of these words, you would stand at Jane’s side definitely. And that’s love I long for. In our real life, there are many examples that ladies lose themselves and become dependent after marriage. They give up their careers and the husband and kids become their center. For another instance, some ladies get married to the man they don’t love but possess a lot. They regard their husbands as ATMs. For the former, they lose themselves in marriage; for the latter, they do exchange with marriage. Besides, some graduates fall in love with others due to loneliness. You can see such lovers break up upon several months. They do not take love seriously; they do not prepare to love somebody; even, they do not know what love is and how to love. They just pretend to know.

I’ve heard the words: who is a real man? A real man is the one you stay with but you can be yourself. When I was in high school, a Chinese poem

named To the Oak, impressed me a lot. I have to say, that’s the love I appreciate.
