　　The United States has many different kinds of climate （气候）。 On the west coast the temperature changes very little between summer and winter. But the north central states have a very different kind of climate. In those states, people wear light clothing during the summer, and they need heavy wool or fur clothing in the winter.

　　In the southwest, the climate is pleasantly warm during the winter, but the summer is unpleasantly hot.

　　In the eastern part of the United States,summer temperatures are very different from winter temperatures.Summers are usually hot,and winters are usually cold.Spring temperatures are comfortably warm, and fall temperatures are pleasantly cool.

　　Years ago, people in the cold parts of the United States didn't often get fresh vegetables and fresh fruits during the winter. Today, however, trucks and trains carry fruits and vegetables very quickly to all parts of the United States. In this way, Americans “send their climates” to people in other states.

　　The emblem ’’ the happy U ’’ which has no fixed meaning is very open in that people can imagine it varyingly. And it has evolved into a smiling face to be the mascot. Besides, the slogan of the game is ’’Start here’’ whereas the slogan of the volunteers’ watchword is ’’ I’m here ’’.

　　After its first being held in Italy in 1959,the World University Games has being developed rapidly.The first game for there to be only 45 participating countries.Then till the 18th World University Game which was organized in Japan in 1995 there were vast number of athletes from 162 countries competed in the game. Today, Shenzhen will set 24 contests to welcome the athletes from the whole world and we do hope the World University Game will be held successfully.

　　I am the only child in my family. Like many other children,I follow a routine way to a so called success: primary school,junior school, a key high school and finally, a prestigious university. Lacking in experiences, I keep on feeling that I am only growing big, but no mature. But two leavings left deep impressions on me, giving me a strong sense of growth.

　　The first leaving occurred about 4 years ago, the days after I received my junior school diploma. It was a summer afternoon.My father rushed home, singing with a red envelope in his hand.Suddenly, a sense of nervousness and excitement came over me.As I expected, this was the admission letter to a famous key high school. My parents began to laugh happily and proudly. But I could easily perceive a sense of grievance and anxiety. That＇s true. My new school life would be rooted in school alone. I have never thought it a challenge for me but they did.

　　On the registration day,my parents were rushing here and there,as busy bees. But I was idled, with nothing to help. I am a doted child, though I was never willing to confess. My mother was cleaning the room while my father was making bed for me.You can hardly imagine a middle-aged man of 1.80 meters tall huddling in a corner of the bed, doing the job like an acrobat.Suddenly, tears slipped down my cheeks. I turned around. I couldn＇t tell whether it was a sense of guilt or the power of love.I could not. I couldn＇t help glimpsing at my father now and then. A few white hairs were conspicuous, shining in the sun.When the moment to say good bye came at last, I dared not look at my parents＇ eyes. But I found myself a capable helper. With most of the job done by me, they decided to leave early. Another moment of leaving! There were no touching words, nor tears or laughter, sadness or happiness,just saying goodbye to each other. But I found confidence in my parents＇tones. That was an appeased leave, too pacified to believe. It was a common way of farewell between adults. And now I did belong to one of them. Yes, I should be independent just as little birds must leave nests when growing up. My parents got it. They trust me, and I am worthy of the trust. I could feel the power of growth.

　　It is true that giving up may make things temporarily easier, but what cannot be denied is that new opportunities arise from perseverance. Never giving up can expand one’s possibility for success.
